Buckingham Bingo mechanic offers musical education

Brass instruments are lifelong passion for Buckingham Bingo handymanBingo handyman helps the community

Some truly extraordinary people have worked behind the scenes at Buckingham Bingo clubs down the years.

But few can boast a longer track record of serving the community than former Buckingham Stardust Bingo Corby handyman Gordon Woollacott.

Mr Woollacott, who will celebrate his 80th birthday next month, has been giving free music lessons to children and running a dizzying number of brass bands and choirs since the 1950s, reports the Northants Evening Telegraph.

More than 45 kids have benefitted

It's thought he has taught more than 45 kids to play brass instruments, including the trombone, the trumpet and the cornet, without charging them a penny.

"I love music – it's in my blood," he explained. "My father started playing in the 1890s and he used to make me practise an hour a day.

"From then on, I carried on playing until I lost all my teeth. I'll carry on until I'm 100, as long as I'm still able to teach the young ones."

A popular figure around Corby

Mr Woollacott has lived in Northamptonshire for more than 30 years, having moved down from Scotland back in 1977.

And he has been blessed with an aptitude for mechanics as well as a passion for music.

Buckingham Stardust Bingo Corby regulars may recognise him as the man who used to maintain the bingo machines at the popular venue.

If you haven't been to Corby recently, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

The recently-acquired Buckingham Bingo branch has undergone a jaw-dropping £1.5 million refit that cements its place as one of the most luxurious bingo clubs in the country.
