Bingo receives Scottish government backing

SNP warns of Labour bingo tax hikes
Officials from the Scottish National Party (SNP) were on-hand at a bingo club in Nethergate, Scotland this week, and warned of potential problems the industry could face should Labour gain power in the country.
According to Dundee East candidate Stewart Hosie, there should be tax parity between bingo and other forms of gaming such as sports betting and online gambling.
"This tax hike on bingo clubs is unfair. Bingo is a highly popular social activity yet is paying 22 per cent while duty on other forms of gambling including sports betting, casino and online poker and football pools will remain at 15 per cent," he said.
Bingo roots
The SNP has a link to bingo which some may find surprising. SNP leader and First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond played the role of guest bingo caller at a club in Glasgow last October.
Mr Salmond appeared before 100 players to call the numbers in order to promote the candidacy of colleague David Kerr, who was attempting to win the Glasgow North East seat held by Labour for 74 years.
The minister said at the time that he believes Glaswegians like the to root for the underdog and were behind the SNP's pan to unseat Labour after 72 years holding power in Glasgow North East.
