How many online bingo players do you know called Emma?

According to a newly published study, Emma may just be the most popular name in online bingo right now.

Claire is apparently the next most common forename, followed by Victoria, Helen and Sarah.

In case you're wondering, the results are based on a profile of every registered member at a UK online bingo comparison website.

It turns out that the ten most popular names are all female, presumably reflecting the fact that 85 per cent of all online bingo players are women.

What may also interest you is that the remainder of the top ten includes some rather upmarket monikers.

Julie or Julia is sixth, Fiona is seventh, Emily is eighth and Miranda is ninth.

Rounding out the top ten is Elizabeth, which includes the variations Liz and Betty.

Reviewing the findings, the website claimed it was proof that online bingo has introduced the nation's favourite numbers game to a more middle-class audience.

Rob Hutchison, owner of the online bingo comparison website, said: "It's interesting to see how bingo players are changing. The game has really shed its traditional image and is becoming increasingly universal."

Not long ago, a government-backed study revealed that there has been a steady rise in remote gambling generally.

Some 10.6 per cent of adults apparently placed bets via the internet, TV or their mobile phones during the previous month in 2009, up from 9.7 per cent in 2008 and 8.8 per cent in 2007.

For the purposes of the study, remote gambling covered everything from online bingo and sports betting to the National Lottery.
